In this 19th century supernatural winter epic, a drunken applejack merchant must go from zero to hero and become the largest fur trapper in North America by defeating hundreds of beavers. The film’s estimated budget was around $150,000. Director Mike Cheslik estimated that the mascot costumes cost around $10,000, and the crew purchased all of the costumes online. After Watson Beaver “faints”; his mustache falls off & lands in the snow as he gets back up. He wears it again in the next scene, despite walking away from it without picking it up. Now this is a film I saw at the Nightmares Film Festival. It’s not horror, but I still wanted to write a review. I should start by saying that this is not usually a movie I enjoy. However, watching this with an audience was a fun experience as the day approached midnight. Writer/star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews’ antics in the theater also add to it. I should also include; This was the Ohio premiere For this movie we have Jean Kayak (Tews) who has an orchid and makes hard apple cider. He is a drunkard who just wants to have fun. One day beavers come and destroy one of his large barrels that contain his cider. This causes everything to fall apart and it is now winter. Jean is not lucky enough to get food and he struggles to survive and then goes into the fur trade. He watches as a bearded man commits a murder. So much so that the man in charge, Doug Mancheski, wants him to marry his daughter, who is a fur trader, Olivia Graves. Jean struggles uphill to become a trapper, and this puts him at odds with the beavers of the area. They’ve created an epic dam that holds a lot more. So I was a little familiar with what I was getting here having seen Tews’ previous film called Lake Michigan Monster. This is similar. There’s CGI and animation in the background. These techniques are also used in the character movements and just bringing it to life in general. This takes a lot of time and I’m impressed with that. What helps is that we don’t get much in the way of dialogue. This is presented like a silent film at times, we even get name cards. It also reminds me of cartoons where our characters didn’t speak. This looks cheap, but it’s a lot harder than it looks. The idea is that they tell the story without using much dialogue. The things we see are repeated. I admit that as we neared the end I was exhausted and ready to go home. I don’t want to discount that though, because staying awake gets harder the closer you get to midnight. I will say though. This movie is made for a theatrical experience or to have drinks and just enjoy it. I can see people hating on this. I’ll tell you as a fan of serious and dark movies that this is a stage cleaner, that if you just roll with it, it’s a great time. I didn’t even mention that all the animals are just people in costumes. It makes it even better with the stunts we saw. If you get a chance to see this in the settings I mentioned, pick this one My rating: 6/10.
